About Prince George: 2008 BC Seniors Games

Prince GeorgeDubbed British Columbia's 'Northern Capital', the City of Prince George is located less than 100 kms from the province’s geographical center. It is a bustling, resource-driven city of nearly 80,000, with ample amenities for any given taste.

Prince George is an outdoor lovers paradise—surrounded by more than a thousand lakes, it is the meeting place of the Nechako and Fraser Rivers. First discovered by Alexander Mackenzie in 1793, it wasn't until 1807 that European explorer Simon Fraser wintered here that a trading post was established and soon the area turned into a town. The area around Prince George is the traditional territory of the Carrier Sekani First Nations people, who made their livelihood off the bountiful rivers, lakes and forests of the region.

For visitors today, Prince George is the fourth largest city in BC, and a gateway to the North. For the urban folks, there are all the stores, cafes, art galleries, boutiques and museums that a modern city can offer. Its outdoor opportunities are endless, with prime lake and river fishing, many golf courses, ski hills and rivers and trails to explore.

Located 780 kms North of Vancouver, Prince George is located at the junction of Highway 97 and the Yellowhead Highway 16. The area is serviced by an international airport. Westjet and Air Canada both have several flights in and out of Prince George daily, with connections to all major regional, national and international centres. Both VIA Rail and Greyhound Bus Lines have regularly scheduled service to and from Prince George.
